Mixed medicine and alcohol!

Question: Mixed medicine and alcohol
I'm on antibiotics right now (apo-Metronidazole) and I mixed with one vodka water tonight, over a period of 2 hours!. The last time I had taken the pill was at 2, so it'd had been AT LEAST 6 hours!.

I'm wondering if this will affect the medicine at all or is more of a concern that if mixing the medicines, could result in something harmful happening to me (for example, dizziness, vomiting, etc!.)
If it;s the latter, I'm not as concerned, I'd rather it just not affect the way the medicine works!.

And I'll learn not to be such an idiot next time!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Mixing alcohol with certain antibiotics causes whats known as a 'disulfiram like' reaction!. Usually the side effects are nausea, vomiting, skin flushing, but a few case reports talk about death!.

Our body gets rid of alcohol by converting
alcohol -- (1) --> acetaldehyde -- (2) ---> aldehyde, where the numbers are enzymes!.

Mixing antibiotics and alcohol causes side effects (not trying to be racist) by kinda turning you into an asian drinker!. Asians sometimes cant drink excess alcohol because they lack enzyme number (2) above, aldehyde dehydrogenase!. This causes a buildup of acetaldehyde which is the toxic bit that causes the vomiting and skin flushing!.

While Asians lack this enzyme, taking metronidazole and other antibiotics inhibit it and essentially have the same effect!.

A kinda outdated treatment of alcoholism invloves drunks taking a drug (disulfiram) that does the same thing as metronidazole but longer and stronger!. Not surprisingly its not that effective as people usually dont like taking things that they might not will make them sick soon! :)Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had to give my ferret Metronidazole, and he freaked out whenever I made him take it!. Is it nasty!?

Mixing the alcohol and antibiotic should do nothing!. It's just an antibiotic as far as I know, so it would not normally have any effect on your brain!. You should be fine, haha!.

The only thing I can think of is if the alcohol messed with the potency of the drug, but I just don't see it happening!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
