Are they ticks or not??!

I live in traverse city, michigan and I have lived here in an apartment with my bf for almost a year!. about a month or so ago I noticed in the bathtub that there was a little bug that looked like a tick!. I killed it and it crushed fairly easily!. My brother was over and said it wasn't a tick!. it was small and a dark brown color!. Then a couple days later i spotted another on the wall and ever since then every couple days i spot another and kill it but I am scared for myself, my bf, and my two cats!. We keep our apartment clean but I have no idea what they are and if they are harmful!. next time i see one i am going to take a picture and post it up!. but any ideas!?!? There are quite a few trees surrounding where i live!.!. might it have to do with that!?Www@Answer-Health@Com
