How long do sleeping pills stay in your system and keep working?!

my sleep cycle is really messed up so i took a sleeping pill last night!.!.(later than i wanted to)!. i took it around 12:30 and it made me tired but i didn't go to bed until 3:00!.!.!.!. when i went to bed i had some trouble getting to sleep, and them my mom woke me up at 10:50 and i fell asleep again until 2:00!.!.!. so my question is, did the sleeping pill make me fall asleep again or is my sleep cycle just so screwed up that my body forced me to fall asleep!?!.!.!.btw i start college soon so i'm going to start going to bed between 11:00 and 11:30, so i can actually get up in the morning!.!.!.
