Answers:
It's called sleep paralysis!. I have looked into it because it has happened to me randomly throughout my life!. Most researchers believe that it is related to the paralysis that happens during REM sleep which prevents us from acting out our dreams!.

I have this happen to me a lot!. I talked to my doctor and he said that i heard something that made me aware of my surroundings but i am not awake!. It just feels like it is because the part of your Brain that deals with hearing is awake but the rest of your brain thinks you are still asleep!. So that is why you can't wake up!. It is a dream but you can hear what is going on around you!. As for the smothering that could just be you trying to hard to wake up when the rest of you body is not ready!.
