Well, it seems to me you have a chronic (long term) anxiety state which is affecting you physically and causing all those unpleasant chest and heart symptoms!.
First off you are never going to die from this problem! Even though at times you think your heart is going to give up!. It never ever happens!.
The solution, answer and remedy to your problem is a psychological one!. Your problem has been caused by some slight psychological occurrence and it has slowly snowballed into the problem you have now!.
Second off, I can't tell you what the problem is that causes you to be like this!. To find this out will require lots of talking and examination of your past history and the onset of the problem!. (Anyone who says otherwise is guessing or stupid)
You need to see someone who can provide some cognitive behavioural therapy!. This is a style of counselling where you will be taught to overcome your anxiety and fears by a gradual process!. Unfortunately family doctors are not clever at recognizing the type of problem you have and you may need to persist a bit with a request to get some psychological treatment!.
My advice would be to avoid medication if you possibly can!. It only masks symptoms and often makes you feel worse!.
Here is a link to cognitive therapy and what is involved, I hope you can find some where you live!. http://en!.wikipedia!.org/wiki/Cognitive_b!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sounds like your hyperventilating leading to a Panic Attack-this can be very debilitating as you know and can isolate sufferers as they become more scared to go out in situations that this will flare up- symptoms are

Light headiness
Giddiness
Dizziness
Shortness of breath
Heart palpitations
Numbness
Chest pains
Dry mouth
Clammy hands
Difficulty swallowing
Tremors
Sweating
Weakness
Fatigue

See a different GP who will help with breathing exercises and other treatment

Good Luck

They told you it was your age!? That doesn't sound right at all!. It sounds like you have generalized anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder!. Look it up and then try to get a referral to a mental health specialist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Once an individual has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, treatment needs to be taken!. Three common treatments for anxiety disorder are:

Counseling & hypnotherapy
Medicines & relaxation
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)
COUNSELING & HYPNOTHERAPY
The patient should be encouraged to talk about his/her problems with an adequately trained counselor who can draw out the exact cause of the anxiety disorder in the course of a conversation!. After adjudging the cause, the counselor can address the problem by convincing the patient of the threat posed by the anxiety disorder on her own life!. Anxiety normally arises due to an asymmetric threat perception from an issue which might not be proportional to generally accepted perceptions!. The patient can be convinced that she had overestimated the problem and can be helped to overcome it!.

Hypnotherapy is the process of hypnotizing the patient and controlling the flow of emotions and thoughts in her mind!. Only expert specialists at hypnotherapy should treat people afflicted by anxiety disorder!. In this method, the patient is mentally forced to reveal the cause behind the disorder and is forced to stop worrying and stay calm!. This is a slow process and requires repeated sessions with the specialist!.

MEDICINES & RELAXATION
Anxiety disorders create acute stress and tension in the mind of the patient!. Patients can be calmed down by use of tranquilizers, on a temporary basis, to help them come out of hysteria!. These drugs must not be used as a permanent cure for anxiety disorders as they can be detrimental to the patient
