Well the way I heard it is that when we itch it's because a nerve is shaking and when we scratch it helps I guess because we reset the nerve by causing it to send a much greater signal!.
Also itching that leads to scratching is also a way of the body getting blood to flush that particular area!. Of course I'm not sure how much it helps because to scratch too much can lead to breaks in the skin and infections!.
Oh and to solve your problem "jhurd67" use a plastic bristle hair brush that has a lot of bushels of those plastic bristols!. I have found that for the itch that just won't leave you alone no matter how much you scratch, those plastic hair brushes with just the right amount of stiffness and plenty of bushels, takes care of all the itches!. It spreads endorphens (spelling is probably wrong)!. Which inturn "numbs" the infected area!. It's like white blood cells!. You don't ask for them, but they come running as soon as your hurt!. And the way it's supposed to work is:

that's a really good question i've asked myself this one!. opinion: I will use dandruff or dry scalp as an example (although an itch is not clearly defined)!.!.!. the skin is irritated and dry and the way to rid itself of the layer is it "itches" and forces you to scratch which removes that dry layer of skin that is the irritant!. maybe!?!?!?!?Www@Answer-Health@Com
in my experience of itchs (over forty years worth now) scratching does not always relieve a itch sometimes it moves and sometimes it goes deeper so thats a bad thing
