Night terrors and epilepsy, any connection?!

Question: Night terrors and epilepsy, any connection!?
My brother is epileptic, and his son, and also my son, aged 5 and 3 suffer occassionally from night terrors!. It has been bought to my attention that the night terrors could be related to epilepsy, does any one know of this!?
With my son, I always know when he is going to have a night terror, when he is overtired, and hot!. Mostly after a busy day and he is exhausted!.
But having said that, that is when my brother will have a seizour, when he is lacking sleep, and de-hydrated!.
I have seen my dr about this and he believes it is just night terrors!.
Thanks for any input!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Epilepsy is a very complex medical condition!. You need to understand that it comes in over 1,000 forms!. It can be hereditary!. In you families case it looks as though it may be!. It does not follow however, that just because one member is having night terrors as you are calling them that they are going to have epileptic seizures!.

Are the night terrors a form of seizure going untreated on the other hand!? The majoity of specialists say no!. Has your brother taken the five year old and the three year old to a specialist neurologist and had their conditions checked out!? The only way to resolve this situation is with good medical assistance!.

You don't say which city you live in if you live in Australia!. If you live in Melbourne the Austin Medical centre has a centre of medical excellence that does research into epilepsy!. There is also research being done into epilepsy in Sydney through the University of Sydney medical school!. The University of Queensland has some research into neurological conditions going on also!.

This may not appear to answer your questions at first but you should get your GP to refer you to a specialist neurologist in your nearest capital city if you don't live in a capital city and get an advanced professional opinion!. If you can get to see a professor from one of these centres of professional excellence then so much the better!.

I see Professor Peter Silburn at Watkins Medical Centre Wickham Terrace in Brisbane!. His phone number is (07) 3839 3688 If you live in QLD the Nothern Territory or Northern NSW it would be worth a trip to see him!. He teaches at UQ!. Look up the various university web sites it you want to find the various profs and find out if they are accessibe for consultation!. You may wait six months or more but it will be worth it!.

I hope that this information helps you to get some help for your nephews!. You can always ring the Epilepsy Association and ask for the names of specialists in your nearest city also!.

I wish you all the best!. I doubt that the night terrors are epilepsy!. However, this doesn't mean that epilepsy mightn't manifest it's self when one of the boys get older!. This is why it is best to get a specialist to check them now!.
