Good for you for wanting to donate blood! It is an honorable thing to do!. Also, there is absolutely no risk of contracting a disease yourself while donating!. They use sterile needles and each needle is disposed of after it's one use!. Therefore, absolutely no chance of getting a bloodborn illness!. You don't come into contact with anyone's blood!. In fact, by donating blood you actually get a free test done for HIV and other illnesses transmitted through blood!. Blood is needed all the time!. Especially certain types!. The "best" type of blood is O negative because it can be given to anyone!. All kinds are needed and used though!. There is also need for plasma and platelets!. I am a nurse and I work on a cancer floor!. We give blood transfusions every single day!. Our patients would die without transfusions!. So on behalf of all the amazing people I have the priviledge of taking care of everyday!.!.!.!.thank you very much!. Giving blood literally does save someone else's life!.

To give blood for transfusion to another person, you must be healthy, be at least 17 years old or 16 years old if allowed by state law!. You must weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated whole blood in the last 8 weeks (56 days) or double red cells in the last 16 weeks (112 days)!.

Need varies from time to time, but blood is always needed, sometimes the supply just gets critically low, like after a large disaster where many people end up hospitalized!.

Donating causes no more risk of getting a disease than having blood drawn at your Dr's office or lab, not sure what your parents are talking about fear of disease!. Getting a transfusion poses a greater risk, however blood has very strict screening and testing processes so that is not likely either!.

Blood does not keep indefinetitly, you will not be able to donate your blood and then have YOUR blood available to you years down the road!. People can donate blood in preparation for a scheduled surgery so that in case they need blood they can receive their own, it is called AUTOLOGOUS BLOOD DONATION!.

Hope this helps
