Tummy bug...drinking water?!

Question: Tummy bug!.!.!.drinking water!?
Hi there, I've a tummy bug + have been vomiting + having diarrhoea for the last 7 hours!. I can't keep water down, but my husband keeps telling me to drink sips, which makes me sick after a couple of minutes!.
Is it best to keep drinking water + bring it all straight back up, or not drink water + not vomit!?
(None of the water at all which I'm drinking is staying down for more and 3-4 mins)
Thanks xoWww@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Drink water!. One of the worst factors of vomiting/diarrhea is dehydration which will magnify and complicate all other symptoms!. What you may want to consider instead of sipping is taking some ginger and after shredding it and steeping it in a pot of boiling water (1 oz ginger to 1 cup of water should suffice) after which take the corner of a clean towel or washcloth and dip it in the mixture!. Suck on the wet end of the towel as much as you can tolerate!. If you do not have ginger available you can do the same with cinnamon!.

This will minimize the amount of water actually hitting the stomach which should quell the vomit trigger!. Other carminatives (stomach soothing) herbs like chamomile, fennel or lemon balm can help settle things down!. I hope this helps!Www@Answer-Health@Com

You may have to go to the doctor/hospital to get an IV to hydrate!. All the throwing up you are doing is just going to irritate your stomach!. You aren't getting hydrated if it keeps coming back up!. They can also give you something for the nausea so you won't always feel like you going to hurl if you eat/drink anything!. I had severe nausea before and my boyfriend kept making me drink water because he wanted me to stay hydrated!. After still throwing up no matter how little I took in for almost the whole day, I had to go the ER!. Turns out water is the worst thing for you when your body is acting like that!. Waiting for the IV to do its thing is boring but it's a huge relief knowing that I wasn't going to puke from eating or drinking!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I wouldn't drink it!. For me, I've always found that plain water would be unbearable when I'm sick!. I usually either try some weak tea slowly or else put just a little bit of Tang or Gatorade or some kind of drink mix in water (so it's almost all water but so it just gives it a little hint of flavor)!. A little bit of Coke or Ginger Ale are usually things that people can have after they feel as if things have stopped for a while!.

As far as I know, waiting until the "main vomiting" has stopped is pretty much what we have to do!. The sips of liquid are often more because you can feel thirsty after being sick!.

If you're not thirsty it's probably better not to even sip anything!. If you are, one small sip is about all you should try!. Wait a while, see how you feel, and usually your stomach will tell you if you're up to having a half a cup of weak tea or a third of a glass of Ginger Ale!.

Vomiting usually stops within several hours, and unless it's really, really, non-stop (beyond the way the usual "bug" is) you'll probably be fine not drinking!. My kids' pediatrician used to say not to give them anything as long as they were vomiting, and then to start with clear fluids - and eventually bland foods!. Since children dehydrate more easily than adults do, I'm assuming it's safe for adults not to drink while they have a standard "bug"!. (It's what I've always done, and although I've had that super thin, drawn, face after being sick - it always puffs up again after a little Ginger Ale or tea!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

First of all I'm really sorry to hear that you have this very nasty bug!.

Are you in the UK!? If so get your husband, or yourself if you can to phone NHS direct for advice as you need to get fluids, but if it's just making you sick then obviously that's not good!.
If you are not in the UK then if you have an advice line, ring them!.

I hope you feel better soon
