This is a question Research doctors have been trying to answer for some years, since the first study was done looking at this in the 1950s, 'The Doctors Study'!.

The answer is clear cut in those with a medical history of heart disease or thrombotic stroke, but becomes more difficult in patients with no significant past medical history!.

The 1950s study involved large numbers of 'well' doctors who took 330mgs of aspirin a day!. There death rate from strokes and heart attacks did decrease, but more of them died overall, this was due to deaths from bleeding due to the aspirin!.

Many studies have been done since then and even at 75mgs a day there is a level of deaths caused by bleeding, mainly from the GI tract, analysis of six prospective, randomised, controlled studies, with a total of 95,456 subjects - 51,342 being women - showed that aspirin therapy reduced cardiovascular events in both men and women!.

But there was an odd discrepancy!. Among men, the risk of heart attack was down by 32% in aspirin-takers, but in women, aspirin had no effect on heart attacks at all!. Rather, it worked primarily by cutting their risk of stroke by 17%!. But aspirin did nothing to reduce stroke in men!.

Despite this risks may outweigh benefits and depend on what your personal risk of heart attack and stroke is!. Those at increased risk due to smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol or family history benefit more!.

Overall it should not be considered in men below 40 and women below 50 years as in many the risks will still outweigh any possible benefits!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

No!. This is only beneficial for some people with cardiovascular diseases, and those at high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases; is there a benefit from taking LOW dose aspirin like 75mg!.

Several studies have proved that the risk of having a heart attack or stroke is much reduced in some of these people if they take aspirin, this is because it helps prevent blood clots forming!.

HOWEVER you should only take it if you are 'at risk'!. One of the dangerous long term side effects of Aspirin is Bleeding in the stomach or gut!. Because of the possible side effects, healthy people with a low health risk, even the small risk of side-effects from aspirin is not acceptable!.

Aspirin is not a substitute for preventing atheroma from developing!. The most effective way you can prevent the risk is; if you smoke STOP, do regular exercise, eat a healthy diet and remain as close to your ideal weight as possible!.

In a healthy person not at risk, the risks from taking Aspirin daily simply outweigh the benefits!. Only if your in the 'at risk' category as I explained above, are the benefits outweighed by the risks!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
