I am assuming that he is in a hospital or nursing home!. The only real way to determine where he is at this point is to monitor his vitals paying close attention to his respiratory rate and oxygen saturation (or SpO2)!. If his oxygen saturation goes too low, he'll be placed on oxygen if he isn't already!. Keep in mind that if he is given something strong for the pain, like morphine, it will depress his respiratory system so his breathing will eventaully become even more ineffective!. But the point of hospice care is to provide palliative care so that the patient will feel relief of pain and other symptoms!. When the lungs start filling with fluid, it really is only a matter of time before the body gives in!. Just keep an eye on his vital signs so that you will be more prepared when the time is near!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
