Well it depends!. I mean, If this occurs after a dream that has went south, i!.e a Nightmare or Night Terror, it could be a panic attack!. However, if this is a persistent episode it could be sleep apnea, a medical condition in which the neurotransmitters that usually tell the body to keep breathing when your in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep, are mixed up and not sent to the brain causing you to stop breathing in the middle of the night!.

Your best choice would be to schedule a doctors appointment!. If it should occur again before the doctors appointment, get to an area that has fresh air, like a window or air conditioner!. If you feel claustrophobic from it, get yourself into the biggest room into the house and relax!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Probably something you were told by a cruel friend as a kid about not being able to breathe while you sleep and it stayed in your subconscious where it "haunts" you!. As a kid my mom told someone in front of me about a neighbor dying in his sleep and my brother started taunting me that I was going to die in my sleep!. Result!? I've had insomnia ever since!.

Seems to me like the suggestion is acting on your subconscious and making it wake you up to check you're breathing!. (Your subconscious main function is survival, to keep you alive)!. The "cure"!? To talk directly to your subconscious and tell it there's nothing to fear and that from now on it is to make sure it keeps you breathing while you sleep without problem!. (It's like talking to yourself only the part of yourself that is your servant, that accepts suggestions without questioning them!. You don't have to be under hypnosis, just talk to yourself with earnest emotion, and be firm!. It works!)
