How can you get the maximum numbing effect from EMLA cream?!

Question: How can you get the maximum numbing effect from EMLA cream!?
Do you have to put it on the skin and cover it!? or just apply it!? I have to go to this hospital that flat out refuses to give any of their patients Lydocaine before stabbing them with a very painful IV needle/tube next month (the buttheads!.!.!.guess they're a bunch of sadists!.) I have to either ice my hand or use some type of numbing before they do this, I can't stand the pain of being jabbed in the top of my hand, it's more than I can bear (and I have an extremely HIGH pain tolerance!.) I don't want to feel it!.!.!.please help (yes I'll be taking a large quanity of Xanex too, LOL!.)

I wish I could avoid Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater FL, but unfortunately it's the only hospital my Dr is affiliated with in this area!.!.!.!.!.

Answers:
If your doctor orders the lidocaine to be given before the IV, then the nurse has to give it!. The only time a nurse can refuse to follow the doctors specific orders is if he or she has professional reason to believe that the procedure will harm the patient!. The nurses have a duty to perform the procedure otherwise!.

EMLA cream does work but the cream has to be in contact with the skin for 20 to 30 minutes before it has any effect!. It will not be as effective as the lidocaine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

EMLA should be applied and covered for about 45 min to get the maximum effect!. And it IS effective!. It is used frequently for children!. IVs in the hand do indeed hurt, I personally try to stay away from the hand!. You can ask your doctor to order lidocaine for them to use, or, you can suggest they stick you elsewhere (if they're good, they can find somewhere besides the hand!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Have you clearly explained to your Dr that you want the lidocaine!? He could insist to the nursing staff and the anesthesiologist to give you lidocaine!.!.it clearly is his call!. I am a red head and they always have problems starting IV's and refuse to let them start one without lidocaine because they are always pushing and shoving the thing around!. I don't think the EMLA cream is going to do much good honestly, I think the Xanex will do you more good than that!. I would talk to my Dr again and tell him that I need the lidocaine!. I lived in Orlanda and have heard awful things about the Morton Plant Hospital, it's a shame you have to use it!. Push the situation further with your Dr, he is in charge while you are his patient in this hospital!.
