I work on the oncology unit at my hospital!. Our nurse:patient ratio is 4 to 1!. We also have an LVN on the floor that the RNs cover, so the ratio gets twisted a little bit and becomes 5 to 1!. The most I've ever had was 6!. Which isn't bad!. A lot of people ask me how I manage my time, but in reality, your time is worked out for you without you even knowing it!. Sure errors happen, no ones perfect, but they don't happen too often!.

My worst night actually happened when I had only 4 patients of my own without any LVN coverage!. My patient went bad and I had to code them!.

The number of patients has little to some part in how bad or good your shift will be!. It's really the acuity of your patients (or the level of care that is needed per patient) that take effect on how well your shift goes!. For instance, someone on a ventilator is going to need more care than someone who can walk and talk and is in the hospital for an infection!. Or someone who's had extensive abdominal surgery is going to have a higher acuity and need more attention and care than someone who had their appendix removed!. And also, it depends on the patient!. Some patients love to be "heavy" patients; meaning they need a lot when they really dont!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have always worked in in ICU- CCU!. Because!. they patient are critically ill; the patient assignment is usually only on a 1:1 basis esp the patient who just a CABG ( open heart surgery!./ coronary artery bypass graft)

The more sick, the patient, the more I like the challenge!. A typical critical patien has so many tubes coming out of all the orifices!. He's on the ventilator!. I find the experience rewarding !. I feel useful !. I never committed any errors!. The reason for this: I'm a conscientious nurse and a good trouble shooter!. I anticipate any problems; notify the doctors in charge of the patient I get Dr's orders to solve the problems!. I act as the patient 's advocate and hence saved a lot of patients' lives this wayWww@Answer-Health@Com

13!. that was back in the 90's!. no clerk, no cna, just one other nurse taking care of the other 13!. oh and by the way, i also had to open the emergency urology clinic if a patient came in!. i was and still am great at documentation!. so i documented on all 26 patients and helped with the meds, iv's and other incidentals!. today i work icu!. 2 patients max!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
