Answers:
Smoking introduces dangerous chemicals into the system, and the harm they do will depend largely on the frequency of the habit, as well as the genetic disposition of the smoker!. Some people appear to have a higher resistance than others!. Also, smoking leaves deposits of tar and nicotine, which are highly toxic, and the act of smoking causes constriction of the blood vessels, so a smoker who already has heart problems is at extreme risk!. And to top it off, tobacco smoke introduces carbon monoxide into your lungs, so if you're going to smoke, don't do it where the air is already bad!.
Smokeless tobacco can cause cancer of the mouth, throat, gums!.!.!.!.etc!., besides being a disgusting anti-social habit!. And if you swallow the juice, prepare to be worshiping at the porcelain throne, as the toxins in it will make you VERY sick!. A number of MLB players could probably tell you about it, if they still have a tongue!. I remember one baseball player who had to give his up, and about half his jaw, but I can't remember his name!.
I should think the American Cancer Society would have links!. Also, try the Reader's Digest links, as they have done dozens of articles, especially in the 60's and 70's, on the physiological effects of smoking!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Don't think it is easy to measure how long!. Haven't seen any research that has shown that!. It's because the effects are generally seen only after a long time after which the damage is already done!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
