What are some reasons NOT to be an organ donor?!

Question: What are some reasons NOT to be an organ donor!?
I'm an athletic 23 year old guy who is in perfect physical condition and I am not at all religous!. I'm updating my drivers licence due to joining the police force and the organ donor box is there for me to tick but I'm not sure if I should for some reason!. Is there ANY negative to being an organ donor!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I hesitate as well and the reason why is because I don't think regulation around donation and policies as well as the definition of brain death is clear enough and leaves too much to interpretation!.
I can't help but wonder if some, not all by any means, hospitals rush the harvesting in attempt to prevent organ break down, instead of waiting to make sure the person is really too far gone to ever recover!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

these are my feelings and by no means based on fact!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It's a good thing to have questions about how things work, but if you're not getting the answers from someone who knows the whole story, then you may be getting incomplete information!.

Hospitals do not make any money from organ donation!. This system is put in place specifically to prevent unethical behavior on the part of the hospital or doctors involved in patient care!.

Doctors do not want to accept that they have 'failed' and a patient is not going to survive - they are not thinking that if there's 'only' a ten percent chance of survival they may as well part out their patient to the recipients!. That's the furthest thing from their mind!. Never mind that there would have to be consent by the person if they registered as a donor or else from their family if the patient did not register as a donor!. And additionally, the person would have to be eligible after getting their medical and social history and giving them tests to determine if they have diseases that would prevent them from beinig a donor!. So no one knows ahead of time whether a patient will even be eligible to be an organ donor!.

There is no way doctors speed up the process!. Yes, once a person is 80% on the way to brain death, the hospital calls to alert the organ recovery agency, but they can't approach the family until the patient actually has been determined to be brain dead by two neurologists employed by the hospital (not the organ recovery agency)!.

If a patient improves, then the organ recovery agency never moves on the next step of the process, and that's it!. The point of the entire process is ultimately to save lives - not end them!. If that was the case, people wouldn't trust the system and no one would donate!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I can't think of one reason!. If you have no need for them, why not literally save some elses life!? The whole point of a police officer is to be compassionate and to serve the community!. This would be the biggest gift you can possibly give someone!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

My 2 year old possibly needs a kidney transplant!.

Veteran-Military Policeman and in the process of going for CHP!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Coming from a medical background, I can't think of any real reasons!. Some people have the misconception that you may get different health care at the hospital if you're injured and someone down the hall needs a liver!. That's obviously not the case!.

Actually, if (god forbid) something were to happen to you, you'd be keeping your next of kin from having to make that decision and wondering what you would have wanted!. Sorry to sound morbid!. It is a creepy little box to check!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Absolutely there is!. When we were growing up our parents flat out refused to agree to donate our organs!. My mother works in an ER and here's why; organs have to be harvested as soon as humanly possible!. And this usually means identifying somebody who is a potential donor BEFORE they are dead!. So if you're on the brink of dying - if you're a donor - the doctor can make a call on weather they think you will live or not!. If you are an organ donor - they will often be biased toward letting you die!. So if it looks bleak - say, you have a 10 percent chance of surviving - they'll let you die!.

Oftentimes a person that needs an organ will be somebody that that doctor has worked closely with - somebody they have been trying to save, whose family they have known for weeks now etc!. etc!. Who is that doctor going to err on the side of!? Not you, my friend!.

A lot of people say that these are just stories that people make up to scare people about organ donation!. And that's fine you can choose to believe whatever you choose!. But personally I have chosen to believe my mother because, well, she is my mother and I trust her and if she says she has seen it happen then I believe her!.

This is why, when I have children, I will never EVER list them as organ donors!. If they are near death but still have even a small chance of survival - I don't want the doctor that is working on them to be considering just letting them go to save some other kid!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If more people donated noone would have to worry about if so and so got an organ out of preferential treatment!. It does kinda bother me that your heart is still beating until they take it out if you've already been declared brain dead and miracles have happened before!. They are rare, but documented!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If they're really desperate they'll come to your house during the night and harvest all of your organs while you sleep!

seriously though, I can't think of any!. I guess if you want to be buried with all your organs (they might take your eyes!) but yeah!. Good job on being healthy but don't be that dick cop everyone hates!. Just cause you have to act like a dick doesn't mean you have to be a dick!. Remember that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
