How long could someone survive being hung upside down?!

Question: How long could someone survive being hung upside down?
It's for a book I'm writing. Just looking for the consequences of being hung by your ankle till death.

Would it just be that dehydration sets in? Or can you actually die from excess blood to you head? If so, and just a bonus question I guess, How do you die from it? If your heart can pump blood out of your feet why not out of your head?
Also, would it hurt? I imagine after a few hours it would. After a few minutes standing on your hands your head starts to hurt.
Anyways...
Thanks heaps in advance!

If you seen the show 1000 ways to die in the Car Jacked episode a thieft gets stuck upside down. After 3 hours he was in enough trouble to die immediately if he had an aneurysm. If still alive, he would start losing consciousness at around 12 hours. At 24 hours the hemorrhages in his head would kill him.

Basically, the burglar died from "rising blood pressure and multiple strokes caused by the venous hemorrhaging in his skull".

The worst case is probably when the body is entirely vertical and upside down. If someone merely had their feet raised slightly above their head, their outlook may not be so bad.

So I guess it would'nt hurt but you would'nt live for very long.
