i was told that generally, when picking up a 1 pin spare, you're suppost to throw a strait ball at it rather than hooking, is this true? if so, why?

It is true, and the reason is that you are reducing your margin of error by simply flattening your wrist and releasing it straight. Also, if the lane conditions are tricky and unpredictable, you take that aspect out of the equation.

Bowlers will sometimes have a hooking strike ball for the first throw and a spare ball that is a straight ball. Bowling is about percentages. If you are hooking or throwing straight the key to picking up spares is a consistant lighter throw with less rotation on the ball. This will improve your accuracy and less hook will remove lane conditions from the equation. Hope this helps good luck heading torwards that 300 score! :)

You can throw a straight but I always hook it even if it's in the far corner. I just throw it right so that it will hook enough and not fall in the gutter.

Well, you can throw straight.
