It depends on how sick your friend is, how old s/he is, the involvement of the parents if that is a factor, and whether or not they think your friend is still a danger to himself or herself. It might be only a couple of days or it could be weeks, or your friend might be sent to another hospital for in-patient treatment and therapy.
