Patient-Doctor confidentiality?!

Question: Patient-Doctor confidentiality?
I'm going to the doctors about anxiety and depression problems. One of the things i want to get help with is my self harming. My parents know about it but i'm going to the doctors on my own to get this help, because i don't want my parents to know i'm still doing it (they aren't very good at dealing with it). I'm 15 and i'm not sure about the laws and regulations of patient-doctor confidentiality.

I believe your health care system is similar to ours in Canada in where you do not require private insurance so you should be fine in that respect but because you are only 15 your doctor has an ethical and legal obligation to inform your parents or legal guardian if he/she feels you are a danger to yourself or if your parents should request information or if he/she renders treatment other than advice or council.

You better ask the doctor that question. I don not believe the doctor is obligated to keep your info confidential because you are not an adult. Question: Are you paying with cash or are you using your parents insurance. If under their insurance, remember that they'll see the explaination of benefits that come in the mail. Good luck to you, I truly hope that you receive the proper help that you seek.

You're safe if you are in the US. good luck.
