Separation anxiety is a genuine fear of being away from another person. small children will try to hold onto whoever they fear leaving while older kids & adults will try to manipulate by pleading or getting suddenly ill or simply retreating to a corner or chair, either totally silent or crying. some will even display anger but is not really anger but striking out in fear. some kids will be good all day & suddenly act bad to say see you must deal with me-you can't go now. it takes time patience & assurance to ease this & usually goes away after enough short separations & reunions to establish some sort of routine.

You get very nervous and even can't sleep when you loose contact with someone you were very close to. Especially if they had to leave quickly without much notice.

Babies around 1-2 y/o tend to get that when they can't see their mother anymore.

Its just a euphemistic term for insecurity. Nothing more,
