Hypothyroidism and synthroid...?!

Question: Hypothyroidism and synthroid...?
I'm an 18 year old girl, 5'6'' and about 165 pounds. I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and the doctor is putting me on synthroid. From the referral, the doctor told me that it should raise my energy and stop the random weight gain (my levels weren't that high, only about 5.5). After I get put on the medication, and will hopefully start getting my period again (it stopped because of the disease, I haven't gotten it in 6 months), will I lose weight?

Answers:

Once you've gained the weight, it's pretty much there. The best thing to do in order to lose it is exercise. You need to get your hypothyroidism in control though because you'll continue to gain weight. Hypothyroidism has an affect on metabolism, that's why you gained weight. Make sure you have your blood tests done when the doctor orders it. The medication is effective, but if you take too much, you can actually become HYPERthyroid.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 5 years ago and have blood tests done every 4-6 months. At one point I actually became HYPERthyroid because the dosage was too much, so I had to lower the strength of my Rx.

Go to your local library or search the internet. Hypothyroidism can lead to more serious problems, so you should be fully aware of it. You'll learn a lot doing the research on the disease instead of hearing the basics of it from your doctor (they don't have the time to fully teach you). Also, remember to keep up with the Rx, exercise, eat right, doctor visits, and have your blood tests done.

Yes to some extent. Don't expect to lose huge numbers though. Since the Thyroid basically controls your metabolism (and yours was low) starting on Synthroid will increase your metabolism. I recommend that you read up on the medication as there are some minor diet restrictions that you need to be aware of. Good luck.
