I haven't been able to donate to the Red Cross because my iron level has be!
Question: I haven't been able to donate to the Red Cross because my iron level has been too low. Am I anemic?
Am I anemic? Or is it more a problem with my diet?
Answers:
Are you female? The Red Cross's requirements are above the point where a woman is considered anemic, so being rejected for donation doesn't automatically mean you're anemic. If you don't feel unusually tired or weak, don't worry about it. Also, your diet the morning before you try to give blood doesn't really matter- it takes a few weeks for your body to change iron levels significantly. Do you eat a lot of meat, fish, and iron-rich veggies like spinach? You can also try taking a multivitamin with iron in it. Also, if you're female, your iron levels will fluctuate with your period, so you might have just tried to give blood at the wrong point in your cycle. The best point to give blood is a week before your period, when your iron levels are highest.
