y is my kid getting sick with colds all the time?!

Question: Y is my kid getting sick with colds all the time?
My two little girls (ages 5 and 2)are getting sick all the time, and i don't know why. After they're cold is gone a week later it comes back.they're pretty active, but i just want to why they're always sick.they were given antibiotics by their pediatrician but nothing seems to work.Could it be a vitamin deficiency or something?

Answers:

Antibiotics DO NOT HELP A COLD!! They are only for bacterial infections (like strep throat).

Young children catch mild colds very frequently. They are building up their natural immunities to viruses. A mild cold is nothing to be concerned with unless the child is running a very high fever or has difficulty breathing, won't eat or drink or has severe diarrhea.

When they are sick , make sure they drink plenty of water and rest, but they will get over it on their own in a few days.

It is possible that the antibiotics are too mild, or they don't really do anything because the girls do not have a biological infection. Sometimes doctors prescribe because they think the patient EXPECTS something for their doctor's visit. It is wrong, but it happens. That is why biologicals build up resistance to antibiotics.

Next time your girls start acting sick, think about where they have been and what they have been doing. If you are just talking about a runny nose or cough, perhaps you need to talk with the doctor about an allergy medication rather than an antibiotic.

But if your girls are really sick with fever, ear infections, sore throats, and runny noses, it might be time to start talking about a tonsillectomy for them both.

Doctors are so inundated with patients and various health issues, and pressed for time, you need to be proactive in recording clues to the health issues before you get to the doctor's office.

Best wishes

EDIT: With respect to the vitamin deficiency, it wouldn't hurt to give them a daily children's vitamin just to make sure they are adequately provided, but with good nutritious meals they are probably good to go.

How well do they sleep and eat? Lack of sleep, or poor nutrition can weaken the immune system. And a multivitamin wouldn't hurt. You can also ask their doctor if they might have asthma or some mild allergy that makes them vulnerable to respiratory infections.

Bad water can cause this, as can so very many other things...
