Some one told me to raise my arms up when i choke why is that? Like water goes down the wrong pipe and you start to cough why does my mum say "RAISE YOUR ARMS RAISE YOUR ARMS!" i dont get why i have to do that please answer thanks!!

Answers:

For less serious cases of choking, raising your arms helps relax and open your airway so whatever is stuck can dislodge itself.

For serious cases, this isn't anough and the Heimlich maneuver should be done. Be aware, though, that it will hurt to have someone squeeze your chest hard enough to expel a stuck object. That should only be done when the person's life is endangered.

That's why you're asked to raise your arms. The person helping you can then see how serious a case of choking it really is.

That's just an old wives tale.

When your choking your first response should be to crisscross your hands and put around your throat (glottis), this will show a clear sign that something is lodged within your throat and if anyone around you knows the heimlich maneuver they shouldn't hesitate to take action.

it opens up your chest airways....
