MRI???? Please help! Extremely claustrophobic?!

Question: MRI???? Please help! Extremely claustrophobic?
I'm getting an MRI on Thursday to see what if anything is causing my headaches. The problem is I am severely claustrophobic. How long will the test last? What can I do about the claustrophobia? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Answers:

If you let them know ahead of time they will have a sedative waiting on you so you will not be awake when the test is going. I don't think it takes as long as it used to so you might be alright without it though.

An MRI on your head will last anywhere from 20 - 45 minutes depending on how many areas they are checking out and what exactly they are looking for. Just lay still and close your eyes, you wont even notice. (and don't wear any jewelery!)

You can request for a mild sedative when going into the machine- alternatively- many cities have open MRI machines which we send out pts who are claustrophobic- ask your doctor to arrange that.
