Answers:

Peripheral Neuropathy is a condition caused by damage to the peripheral nervous system - the complex web of nerves that connect the central nervous system to the rest of the body. Side effects can include muscle deterioration, a burning sensation, extreme sensitivity to touch, and loss of balance and coordination. A person living with PN often must make significant adjustments in order to function in their day-to-day life. Extreme effort is often required to do the most basic of tasks – buttoning a shirt, zipping a jacket, putting on shoes, picking up a glass of water, using silverware, even simply walking and sleeping. In some cases, the onset of pain with PN is sudden and severe. There are no current known treatments that can cure PN, which has more than 100 causes, but there are ways to relieve PN pain and life a better life. Anti-convulsants, tricyclic antidepressants and opiate agonists can be used help relieve nerve pain, and healthy lifestyle changes can have a dramatic, even preventative, impact on PN.

Resources and information on PN can be found online, on the Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy website, at www.foundationforpn.org. A vibrant PN dialogue and community also can be found on Facebook (Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy) and on Twitter (@Foundation for PN).

That would depend on if the alcohol is what's causing the neuropathy. There are many things that cause it. Some, like diabetes, can be found in a blood test. Others are what's called "idiopathic"- no cause can be found. They can even be psychogenic. I have a peripheral neuropathy, still not sure what's causing it, but it started a few weeks after a camping trip, so we're wondering about Lyme disease.
