A sore throat can be caused by cough, bacterial/viral infections, post nasal drainage, or dry air. If you breathe through your mouth at night, it can cause dryness and soreness. A sore throat is usually indicated by pain, discomfort when swallowing and a scratchy feeling. Strep throat includes symptoms of high fever, swollen lymph nodes, headache and it needs to be treated by a physician.
Treating a sore throat can include local anesthetics or menthol, such as lozenges or mouth sprays that you can use every 2-4 hours as needed. With the lozenges, it is important to let them slowly dissolve in your mouth to help keep the throat moist. I would also recommend ibuprofen to help alleviate some of the pain and inflammation associated with sore throat. Non-drug alternatives can include hard candies, warm saline gargles, hot tea and fruit juice. It is important that non-prescription alternatives are only used for about 2 days and then you need to be referred to a physician if your symptoms do not improve.
I would recommend trying a Chloraseptic sore throat lozenge that contains both benzocaine and menthol. Just use one lozenge at a time and slowly let it dissolve in your mouth. It is important that you continue to drink at least 24 ounces of water each day. You could also try a humidifier to keep the air moist while you sleep at night. With any humidifiers, it is important to keep them clean according to the manufacturers directions, store in the original box and do not store them with the filter.
