If you have to go to a psychiatrist does that mean your mental?!

Question: If you have to go to a psychiatrist does that mean your mental?
My grandma has a bad depression problem. She has to go to a psychiatrist, but she doesn't want to go, because she thinks if she goes it means she is mental. Can some one please help me explain to her, that it doesn't mean she is mental? I want her to go for her own good and if she doesn't go she won't get the help that she needs. Since I can't convince her than I need some one to explain if it means your mental or not. Has any one ever had to go to a psychiatrist? If, so than why? Do you think it means your mental? If you have never been to a psychiatrist, can you give me your mental input? Thanks all input is appreciated. :) xD

Answers:

Hay, no it doesn't mean you're mental being thrown into a mental institution pretty much covers that.
Going to see a psychiatrist doesn't work for everyone, but it does help to be able to talk to someone who doesn't know much about you, a professional with an outside opinion.
I get why she doesn't want to though, I'm currently clinically depressed & have to go see a counselor pretty much didn't want to 'cause I'm not crazy ha & I'm not a talking about my problems kinda person so it's difficult for me, but it does help.
I understand why psychiatrists are useful, you should try convincing her again to go.
It'll be a huge help.

Will this convince her...
"Extensive medical training enables the psychiatrist to understand the body's functions and the complex relationship between emotional illness and other medical illnesses. The psychiatrist is thus the mental health professional and physician best qualified to distinguish between physical and psychological causes of both mental and physical distress."

These disorders range from mild to debilitating, and include anxiety, depression.

Because they deal with mental as opposed to physical conditions it doesn't mean the patienis mentally ill, but that they needs help to sort out a few things.

No depression happens to lots of people for one thing or another, like death in the family or redundancy or just plain old life is crap at the moment. If their asking her to see a psychiatrist she obviously has tried all other avenues like anti depressants, and all they will do is try to get to the bottom of it.

There is no harm in it, and maybe she will find comfort in seeking professional help, rather than seeing her local doctor that doesn't really specialize in depression.

Getting help of any kind is a good idea. People go to Psychiatrists for many reasons and in most cases they are not crazy. She may have a chemical imbalance causing her depression. Better safe than sorry.

It's like finding someone to talk to that just might understand where you are coming from. They might be able to give some suggestions to help you get to a better place in your life.
