Understanding my friend's death of a subdural hematoma?!

Question: Understanding my friend's death of a subdural hematoma?
My friend died in October of 2010 while I was out of town. I am trying to understand what exactly happened to him. I know that he was murdered and there is an investigation, but I am trying to piece together what would have happened.
I was told his killer hit his head against the wall 3 times (he also had a spinal brain tumor that had been removed years previously) which caused a subdural hematoma, but his cause of death is listed as aspiration of vomit.
Also, he was alive for some time at the hospital, this is where I become confused. They allowed his mother to come and see him and she said he had a breathing tube and that his hands were already cold and blue and she felt that he was already dead at this point. She says that they "worked on him" but could not save him.
I understand it's difficult to piece this together, but what exactly happened to him? Thank you.

Answers:

He was hit on the head and was unconscious, he vomited and breathed some of that in, the head injury which resulted in a blood clot under the brains covering and the lung injury were not compatible with life and he died.
