I have dermatophagia, I need information and advice on how to overcome this?!

Question: I have dermatophagia, I need information and advice on how to overcome this?
I have Dermatophagia, a.k.a. biting the skin around your nails until they bleed. Strangely enough, I don't bite my actual nails, just the skin. I do it when I'm bored, or nervous or stressed. And I tend to do it more on my dominant hand. But it gets to the point where it bleeds and my fingers are red and puffy. I have read that it is a form of OCD, and I have been trying to use lots of cuticle creams and put bandaids on my fingers when I'm at home, to keep me from biting the skin. Does anyone have any information as to what causes this strange compulsion? Is it something psychological? Also how do I overcome this? Thank you.

Answers:

Self-harm is usually a coping mechanism developed by a person as a way to deal with anxiety and/or stress. I'd encourage you to consult a qualified counselor to help you to learn what may be causing this for you and who can help you learn ways to deal more effectively with the things that are causing you to experience anxiety/stress.

Something else is that you need to find a more positive outlet for your feelings. Journaling, drawing, exercise, etc. are great ways of expressing your feelings that are much less likely cause harm to your body.

Another thought is to put something edible that you don't like the taste of or that causes your tongue to hurt a little on your fingertips, such as mustard, or maybe cayenne pepper mixed with a little water into a paste & spread on the areas where you chew your fingers. Cayenne will actually help stop the bleeding, and will make your tongue burn some if you try to chew your fingers, but it won't hurt you if you do get it in your mouth.

I hope this helps...take care,
