Why doesn't America have a free health care system?!

Question: Why doesn't America have a free health care system?
Hi, I'm from Australia and I'm interested in learning abut the American medical system.
I hear a lot of people say they do not have 'insurance' - does this mean, if someone was sick or injured, the hospital would not treat them? Or do they just get a huge bill or something?
I am wondering why they do not have a system like Medicare in place? Here if you are sick or injured, you just show your Medicare card and it's taken care of......or there is a tiny little gap to pay, but not much.........
thanks guys :-)

Answers:

If they dont have insurance, they try to get care through a hospital Emergency Room which in turn sends a bill to the government to pay and that is the problem. Everyone must have private insurance unless they are in a government-subsidized program for medical services (either federal or state) People get a huge bill even if they do carry insurance because insurance pays only 80% of the bill. Many people dont pay those bills, and file for bankruptcy.

We have a system of community health clinics in every locality where people can go but many people are not aware of them because they used to get insurance at their job. Clinics charge usually much less than a private doctor, usually based on a person's income. Many of these clinics are not open to new patients. They often have low-income requirements.

In a country of 307 million people, there is a crisis in subsidizing care for disabled and older people, so that half the population would like to get rid of those programs of assistance, so how do think a free program like Aussie Medicare would ever be in place. The reason is that lobbyists for insurance and pharmaceutical companies, in this case, influence people in Congress not to change the current system. Money talks.

OOH! Great question. Why indeed are we so retarded, so completely out of it, that we can spend zillions making movies and war, but cannot get it together to have Medicare for everybody?

Yes, they get a huge bill and they lose their house if they have one.

We have Tories here, call themselves "Republicans". Any attempt to change anything comes from the center-right "Democrats". Insurance companies and even hospitals are profit-making.

Meanwhile Rupert Murdoch (remember him? he owns a lot of our media) and Fox Noose tell the world that "Obamacare" is a threat to the Amurrikan way of life. Wave the flag, me hearties, while you rip off the public.
