Is being overweight genetic?!

Question: Is being overweight genetic?
I recently lost weight going from 160 to 133- I'm 5'8 and my mom has been nagging be about losing weight! >.<

Today she told me that when I get her age I'll gain all the weight back plus some, then she pointed to her body and said 'this is what you have to look forward to!'

Now she is very much overweight and her saying that scared the **** out of me! I tried to get her on a more healthy lifestyle but she wont budge :(

So do you think that weight is genetic?

Answers:

Your mom is only 10% correct. As you get older, your metabolic rate becomes lower, causing you to have easier time gaining body fat. This DOES NOT mean that you somehow balloon up once you turn a certain age.

When losing weight through caloric deficit, either through less caloric intake and/or more caloric output through exercise, your body eventually reaches a homeostatic energy balance. Meaning you reach a plateau. Longer you stay at this plateau (approx 3 to 5 months), your body understands this new weight as the new status quo. This is a good thing because your body will resist suddenly gaining weight, bad news is same thing goes for losing weight.

The take away point here is that you keep your target weight for a long time and keep a healthy lifestyle, even when you pass your mother's age, you won't magically become her weight or shape due to 'genetics.'

Make no mistake though, genetics do play a role in person's size and body fat gain/loss, but not in the way your mother has described it.

Weird thing about fat loss is that it has a lot to do with your environment. Your family may have, unbeknown to them, been fostering an environment for fat gain. So it's normal to meet some resistance from your family member when you begin to lose fat. Don't let it discourage you and keep up the good work.

yes and no, you have a genetic structure, that wants to follow a set of plans, but you can change the plans. Your mom sounds very jealous, she's aging, and doesn't want you to be happy, ( probably doesn't realize she's doing it, just human nature stuff).

As long as your losing weight the right way, which is working the muscle, the weight won't come back.

Maybe after awhile of seeing you healthy, she'll change her mind, and get healthier with you, but don't let her opinion sway you.

Make a list of special talents you have, or things you do that are good.
