Should I be worried about this reaction to Amoxicillin?!

Question: Should I be worried about this reaction to Amoxicillin?
I had increasing tonsil stones and I went to the doctor to see what they could do about stopping them. She said she saw a slight irritation in my tonsils so she put me on Amoxilcillin to help reduce swelling and try and reduce the stones as well.

3 days after being on amoxicillin I started getting: very bad sore throats, tight chest pains, hard breathing, very bad headaches, lung/heart pain, a cough, and swollen nasal passage.

Should I go see someone else about this? This seems really weird to me, because I wasn't sick at all prior to the medicine. Now i feel like i have a bad cold/virus or even pneumonia.

Is this a normal reaction??

Answers:

This doesn't sound like a typical allergic reaction. Sadly when people go to see the doctor, they often get sick because they might be in the lobby or in a room where someone that was ill previously spent 10 minutes filling the air with virus.

Consequently being on amoxicillin for "slight irritation" in the throat is kind of silly since tonsil stones are not a bacterial infection per se and "irritation" on your tonsils doesn't mean you have a bacterial infection. You don't really need to be on the amoxicillin for medical reasons. Your doctor did what many doctors do when they see something in the throat they don't like, they wack with antibiotics. 95% of the time it is not necessary.

You could certainly stop the antibiotic and see how you feel. It sounds like you actually have influenza, aches and pains, congestion, sore throat, headache . . . yup, someone in the lobby hacked in your airflow. Bummer.

Call your provider however, your symptoms are worrisome, the tight chest pain, hard breathing can get serious, you might want to go to the urgent care or ER to get checked out.

Good luck.

You should contact your Doctor as soon as possiable, or go to your emergency room.
