With a pipe you get straight unfiltered smoke.
With a bong, the water catches some of the heavier particles. The problem is that THC, what gets you high, gets caught as well. So you have to smoke more to get high. So the filtering just wastes weed.
A vaporizer is the safest and most efficient way. It pays for itself.
