What are the real negative affects of smoking weed? Need PROOF?!

Question: What are the real negative affects of smoking weed? Need PROOF?
I only smoke once a week. Would that affect my athletic performance in football, basketball, or track? I know for a fact weed doesn't destroy brain cells but the rate I'm smoking would it paralyze or slow down brain cells? If you know any proven negative affects please tell me I would appreciate it.

Answers:

Well there is some evidence that cannabis can actually cause injury to hippocampal neurons, involved in the formation of new memories, among other things.

It will definitely affect your lung performance due to the smoke you're inhaling (similarly, though perhaps not as badly as cigarette smoke) meaning you're less able to efficiently breathe while exercising hard - this will limit your performance.

There are loads of other effects, among them decreased fertility and propensity towards some forms of mental illness. Check the wikipedia link in the source, which provides a reasonable overview of recent research.

How do you "know for a fact" that weed doesn't kill brain cells? You're inhaling smoke, which is not oxygen, which is suffocating your brain. That will cause damage in the long run. Also, inhaling smoke, whether it's from a bonfire, a cigarette, weed, or fumes from an exhaust pipe on a car damage your lungs. Less lung capacity means decreased athletic performance.
