It was recently reported that a huge amount of ear infections are actually caused by viral infections, which doctors don't treat. They just give you antibiotics for a bacterial one. I would suggest trying Apple Blossom Naturals All-Natural Ear Infection Drops, which treats viral, bacterial and fungal. that way you are making sure you are treating whatever kind of infection it is. You can get it on amazon or their website, and it's natural so won't hurt ya.

Try taking an antihistamine (ask your pharmacist's advice, some, like diphenhydramine make people drowsy)
Another option is a decongestant (pharmacit again) - although the oral ones don't suit me and if you use a spray don't do so for more than 5 days.

The middle ear is connected to the back of the nose by a short narrow tube, the Eustachian tube. This tube normally opens when we yawn or swallow to allow secretions to drain from the middle ear. It also keeps air pressure equal both sides of the eardrum.
Think how taking off and landing in a plane can affect ears.

A cold or allergy can block the Eustachian tube due to congestion in the nasal lining. This prevents the normal flow of fluid from the middle ear. The fluid begins to build up often causing dulled hearing, tinnitus (noises in the ear), sometimes pain.

Most ear infections follow a cold - a viral infection and antibiotics don't have any effect on viruses. Your bad throat must have been a viral infection.

I just recovered from an external ear infection (otitis externa, also known as "swimmer's ear"), and the symptoms of that are a blocked ear and painful outer shell (also occasionally spreading to the jaw and teeth), and an ensuing cold with blocked nose canals.

There are two main types of ear infections (both of which are bacterial and easily treatable with antibiotics or antiseptic eardrops): external ear infection and mid-ear infection.

You need to let us know what kind of symptoms you're experiencing then we'll give you the 411. :)

Hope this helps.
