How did you stop smoking?!

Question: How did you stop smoking?
What worked for you?

Answers:

I shared my story on how I finally kicked the habit w/ a similar question in the past. So here goes.

I quit 2 yrs ago and haven't gone back like before. I was always trying to quit the past 10 yrs. w/ no success. Once I had quit for 18 months and bc I gained weight I fell back into the trap.
I always felt like something was missing? a friend? I finally realized that the cigarette is not a friend but our enemy. While we're young & healthy it seems our body can handle anything. After some years when your body says it is overloaded w/ toxins and it breaks out either to MS, emphysema, arthritis, cancer, tumors etc...then I got a BIG scare. I always was a walker. Walked everywhere. All of a sudden my r. leg started going out on me. I couldn't control it to walk properly. Felt rubbery and just wouldn't obey. I was 40 yrs old. Anyways, long story short...I was diagnosed a year later w/ MS. I was admitted to the hospital for more detailed testing and it scared the crap out of me. Plus I saw alot of sick people coughing up phlegm and you can just tell they were smokers and very sick now. I saw this for 5 days while I was in. The tests they did to me seemed brutal. So since I couldn't smoke the 5 days I was in; then I just said "please God help me to continue to quit". "I don't want to die". I have 2 boys and they need me. You see I hit rock bottom. I walk w/ a cane now. I feel retarded. Really, it is so humbling. Then I saw a few videos on youtube about "dangers of smoking" "cigarettes kill" and it finally sank in my mind how dangerous they really are and plus we are paying to suffer and die. So I have kept away from them bc when the urge does come to me to want to light up; I think of my hospital stay (which was not fun), and the videos I watched on youtube. I also quit sweets & breads so I don't gain weight. I increased my veggies, fruits, & nuts. I feel more healthy than ever even though my walking isn't good...I still feel alot healthier now than before. I've also joined the gym and do some weights & cardio...I try to do what I can but not over do it.
You probably will benefit like I did by watching some documentary movies like "The Beautiful Truth", "Food Matters" "A Poisoned World" and "Simply Raw"... I had a rude awakening but am glad so I was able to do something about it before it was too late.
Get educated and the more knowledge you get about what you're doing to yourself...the more power to you in quitting I believe.

Hopefully this helps :)
