How much does blood cost?!

Question: How much does blood cost?
I donate blood frequently and I'm just wondering how much a hospital charges for it? I figure they'll need to cover costs (equipment, personell, testing) but how much of a profit are they making on my pint of blood?

You can easily check your minimal health care rates in internet, for example here - health-quotes.isgreat.org

Most blood centers are non-profit. They do have to cover their costs and employees. Our hospital pays about $190 per unit of regular blood from our regional blood center. If the blood has added needs, it costs more. The hospital will charge a blood administration fee and will charge the patient for the unit of blood. I don't believe anyone is making alot of money from your donated blood. The one with the most to gain is the patient that receives your blood! Keep that in mind! =)

The price charged by a regional blood center to a hospital for a unit of red cells is generally in the $190.00 - $225.00 range. This covers all costs associated with collection, processing, testing and shipping. What the hospital charges varies, but expect $400-500 plus (minimal).
