Do I need a catheter for acl surgery?!

Question: Do I need a catheter for acl surgery?
I'm getting a spinal injection that numbs everything waist down. I don't want the urinary cath put in. Does everyone who gets this type of anesthesia have to do this?

Answers:

For an ACL repair? No catheter.

The spinal is an excellent choice. You will feel SO much better after the surgery.

There is a chance that you will have difficulty peeing after the surgery is done, because the nerves that work the bladder are among the last to return to normal. If that's the case, you may need to have your bladder emptied with a single catheterization (the tube does not stay in). That can happen after general anesthesia too.

Good luck with the surgery.

I'm an anesthesiologist.

Your bladder will go to sleep, so to speak, and you will not be able to pee on purpose. When this happens the catheter is inserted to drain the bladder. If you can pee, you can by pass this procedure.

Yes. Since you will not be able control your bladder, you could pee and spread infection. Stay safe and get the catheter .
