Basic physio-pharmacology. Here is a decent beginning read.

Contraceptive: Birth control simply makes the mucus in the uterus thicker and slimier so that sperm can barely (if at all) get through so that sperm cannot fertilize the egg.

A female condom is inserted into the vagina to block sperm but has less of a chance of working than a male condom and/or birth control pills due to the fact it may be more flimsy and doesn't exactly stay in (learned from personal experience)

The skin patch pretty much has all kinds of stuff in it that gets through to the blood stream (absorbs into the blood stream like a birth control pill would) and has the same effect on the uterus and doesn't really allow sperm to get through to fertilize an egg and get a woman pregnant just like the shot would too.

My gynecologist educates me when I ask the same questions.

Go see a gynocologist. She or he would be able accurately answer all your questions.

One simple answer: They keep the sperm from goin too far in.
