No one is born a serial killer, and only a small fraction of psychopaths become serial killers, but psychopathy is a biological condition of the brain that shows up on brain scans, so it is likely that some people are born with a muted or nonexistent ability to sense emotional cues from others.

The person who is born a sociopath is more likely to become worse if exposed to trauma, and I think it may also be possible that a child who is constantly traumatized may turn from more or less a normal person with problems to a person who is no longer willing to let their emotions be so affected anymore. They become fed up and their emotional sensibilities are made numb by repetitive abuse. This, I think, may be a coping mechanism that eventually sets them up to be very much like a natural psychopath.

For some serial killers, psychopathy is not the issue. Some serial killers were simply deluded and out of touch with reality. Another group to consider are those who had different emotional issues, such as Bipolar Disorder and Addiction, that contributed just enough to turn them into serial killers.

All in all, though, I think that both nature and nurture play important roles.

My opinion is that some people are born sociopaths, but they can be taught to behave in a normal way. Serial killers are not necessarily sociopaths. Supposedly, Jeffrey Dahmer had a fairly normal childhood. His issues may have been triggered by his sexual problems. Perhaps, serial killers start out as sexually dysfunctional and then spiral out of control into killing. There are many books on this subject. I find it fascinating.

They aren't born killers but they have a deficit that lets lean in that direction. This can also happen from certain head injuries.

people can be born having a predisposition to mental disorders, but a large factor is how they were raised and how their childhood was.
