Should I have my tonsils removed? 10 points best answer :)?!

Question: Should I have my tonsils removed? 10 points best answer :)?
Hi, I'm a 15 year old girl and ever since I was a kid I've suffered from chronic tonsillitis that keeps coming back worse each time. I was supposed to have my tonsils removed when I was 4 but then our doctor left and the new one refused to go ahead with the procedure. I've also discovered that I have 'tonsil stones' or 'tonsilloliths' which cause great discomfort, really bad breath and a foul taste in my mouth. They only form while you still have your tonsils...But I'm aware that tonsillectomies usually aren't performed on teenagers or adults...

So, have any of you had your tonsils removed? What was the procedure like? Were you in a lot of pain afterwards? And will the procedure be dangerous or anything at my age? Thanks :)

Heyy,

I'm 18 I had my tonsils out on Thursday due to having absolutely awful tonsilloliths!
Apparently the old you are, the worse off you'll be, but I've actually been pretty good, I read so many horror stories about having it done..and yes, to be honest, I have cried twice because swallowing my medication has hurt so much, but its now day 4 and I'm sitting here eating noodles as if nothing has happened =D

Having my tonsillectomy didn't cost anything, thanks to the NHS, neither did getting my medication afterwards.

I went in at 8am on Thursday, had to wait around a bit but went into surgery at 11am, and was out and waking up at 12! You feel fine when you're waking up, and for most of the day. The bad bit for me that day was my first drink of water, it was pretty bad, this was the first time I cried! But you must stick at it!!

I slept a lot on that day, and on the friday so when I was awake I only watched a few episdoes of Family Guy or something and sipped water as best as I can (trust me, drink as much water as you can will REALLY help you recover!) Saturday I woke up with quite bad ear ache, and a lot of pain in my throat causing me to cry the second time, but I took my medication (make sure to take it like clock work!) drank somewater and within the hour I felt a lot better.

The only things i've been eating are ice lollies (no ice cream!!! -the dairy is not good when you're healing from a tonsillectomy, so stay away from milkshakes too) jelly and soft pasta + noodles.
Last night (saturday) when my dad got back from work I was able to talk normally (you can barely talk for the first few days) and since I'm only on day 4 now (Sunday) I think it's incredible!

I think the most important thing to remember is to TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!
Lots of rest, Lots of water, Keep taking medication exactly when you need to, and eat as best you can!

I would say to get a tonsillectomy, as you have the same symptoms as I did, and even though its only been 4 days, I feel so much better! It's not easy to get through, but it is very bearable, and quite enjoyable at times (with all the sleeping and watching films!). I would also say to keep very optimistic, and keep as happy as you can, this (strangely enough) will help you get through it.

Trust me, I read hundreds of peoples tonsillectomy stories, and mine hasn't been anywhere near as bad as any of them, and to be honest I think its mainly because of how much water I'm drinking!

Sorry for rambling on, but yes, I hope you get it all sorted, and don't have to put up with tonsilitis anymore =)

Yes you should. You'll be given an anesthetic, so you'll be asleep during the procedure. My smallest brother went through the procedure when he was 8, you'll just wake up with neck pains because your wounds are healing. You will be enforced to eat ice cream, or liquid food so that dry food won't disturb the process of healing in the back of you throat. You won't be able to talk much because of the pains. So far, the healing interval isn't very long.

Tonsils are not removed routinely anymore. Tonsils are removed if a patient has 4-5 infections per year or related problems. Looks like you qualify for a tonsillectomy. New tonsillectomy procedures are safer such as using laser. Your age is really not a factor.

I never had my tonsils removed but my parents tonsils were removed and I never seem to have any problems with my tonsils. I think that before you get your tonsils removed you should make absolutely sure there is no other way to fix your tonsillitis. What kind of food do you eat? Are you exercising enough and getting eight or more hours of sleep? Do you eat the right amount of food not to much and not to little? Do you drink caffeinated drinks and drink your calories are just drink water? Do you drink enough each day? These are all questions you should ask yourself before getting your tonsils removed and if there is anything in the way you take care of your health that you can improve on I would recommend that you try improving on your life style before having your tonsils removed

Even if you think that you are healthy in every way I would still recommend making sure of that because sometimes people may think they do everything right even if they don't. For instance some people may assume that a certain kind of food is healthy because it is low on fat and calories wile failing to notice that the food is processed. If you find though that you already live a healthy life style or change your life style and you still have tonsillitis and it has not even improved then you may just have to get your tonsils removed.
