How can I stop my cough? Nothing is helping?!
Question: How can I stop my cough? Nothing is helping?
Answers:
First, make sure you're getting plenty of fluids. Dehydration can cause a dry, irritated throat. A dry, irritated throat will make you feel like you need to cough, but coughing will only irritates it further. Mucinex isn't going to help much if there's no mucous to break up. A cough suppressant helps. Read labels and make sure you know what symptoms the drug you're taking is for. I've also done a teaspoon of honey to soothe. If you have any post nasal drip, that could also be causing the irritation. An antihistamine dries up any of that, but if you don't have post nasal drip, and are already dry and itchy, then it's not going to be effective, and will only succeed in drying you out more. If the cough continues for anything longer than a week, I'd go have your ears checked, to make sure you don't have an infection that is causing the cough to linger.
personal experience
When this sort of cough happens, you sometimes cough so much you literally "hurt" your throat, and so you feel like there is something there (which urges you to cough) but there is none.
try these:
1) keep drinking hot tea with honey and lemon in it, and try to minimize talking/singing to a minimum.
2) try some Manuka honey.
It will take some time, but will blow over (had same thing last year!!)
I'm a nurse.
Honey!
God bless

Try getting some over the counter cough drugs, specifically with codeine in. It acts directly as a cough supressant.
don't worry about it, just cover your mouth.
