Can a EMT-basic work alone?!
Question: Can a EMT-basic work alone?
2. what are there job duties?
3. where can they work beside ambulance?
Answers:
Many services run basic crews. The EMT-B works alone in the back of the ambulance, if ALS is available, the basic will treat the patient until a higher licensed EMT meets them enroute. If ALS is not available, then the basic treats all the way to the hospital.
EMT basics also do many inter-facility transports. Many patients being moved between hospitals or from nursing homes to hospitals and back don't require advanced care, but aren't able to be transported by car or wheelchair van.
A basic's duties are assessment, bleeding control, basic airway devices, CPR and AED, splinting, and sometimes a few meds like nitroglycerin and aspirin.
Basic EMTs usually work ambulance, often as drivers for paramedics, they also work transport such as in wheelchair vans. Some hospitals use EMTs to help in the ER, but that is unusual.
