How to treat severe headaches?!

Question: How to treat severe headaches?
Lately, I've been having some pretty severe headaches. They are usually located behind my right eye. They last for several hours. I've had MRI and there is no tumor or anything severe like that. Apparently they are just cluster headaches. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to alleviate the pain? Painkillers, even prescription, don't typically work on these headaches for me.

Hey, the usual thing to treat cluster headaches in the moment is to breathe oxygen, 10 liters per minute (approximately - adjust according to your needs) through a non-rebreather mask. In most sufferers, it gets rid of the headaches in 5-10 minutes. Your doctor should be able to prescribe you a home oxygen tank and mask.

If you want something different, injection imitrex helps take away the headaches in most people, too, but it doesn't work for me.

Obviously, you can try excedrin like the others suggest, if you haven't already. Cluster headaches are very different from migraines, however, and if you truly have clusters then excedrin probably won't help at all.

The broader way to keep from getting a cluster headaches in the first place is to take preventative medication on a daily basis. The usual preventatives are verapamil, topamax, indocin (also called indomethacin), and lithium. I find that taking indomethacin when I get a headache will *sometimes* abort it, too. Verapamil is the most commonly prescribed - take the pill every morning, and your headaches will miraculously disappear after about a week. Stop taking it, and you'll have them again.

The other thing is to avoid alcohol if it triggers your headaches. Many (but not all) cluster sufferers find that even a few sips of alcohol can give them one of these headaches - so maybe pay attention to your headache and drinking patterns to see if they overlap.

Good luck!

excedrine, coffee helps too, eat a balanced meal dont skip any meal, stay away from sugary stuff, drink tea, if you get a fever take a warm shower and sleep with an icey cold patch on the affected side of face/head. thats pretty much it.
