I was given a soap dish that is labeled "for decorative use only."?!

Question: I was given a soap dish that is labeled "for decorative use only."?
I assume that means the glaze has lead or something nasty in it. Is it really okay to have a soap holder that has a toxic material in its finish?

Thanks!

These days US manufacturers do not use lead in glazes. Sometimes there are other chemicals that are of a high enough concentration that it is not to be used for functional ware (that you eat or drink from). But if this is an antique, or is from another country, such as Mexico or China, there is the possibility of lead in the glaze.

It could also mean that you need to be careful that the finish doesn't come off when cleaning. For example, a silver or gold luster on a rim could come off if put in a dishwasher or cleaned with an abrasive cleaner.

If you are concerned about toxic chemicals you could get it tested. Or just put your decorative soap in it and use something else for everyday.

I am a potter.

No company would be allowed to sell something with lead in it.
There is no reason to assume that the glaze is toxic. The label is obscure. All soap dishes are for decorative use only.
Why not write to the manufacturer and ask for an explanation.

Well if it is for decorative use only, make sure you don't eat any of it.

I have no idea!!!!
