Throat spray confusion... please help?!

Question: Throat spray confusion... please help?
I've had a sore throat for about 5 days and I went to my doctor on Monday but he said he couldn't prescribe me anything as it wasn't bad and i should just gargle mouthwash. I've been gargling twice a day for months so that wasn't helpful.
I bought some Difflam throat spray today after being recommended. I sprayed it at the back of my throat as the instructions said, but it made me gag. I'm guessing this is because its a reflex and it was something on the tonsils that isnt normally there? The taste also makes me gag. Anyway, I have to spray it 4-8 times so I had to grin and bear it. I decided to have a drink after each spray to get rid of the taste so i stopped gagging. However, im thinking i shouldnt have a drink because im spraying it on the back of my throat, and then im drinking water straight away, so im just washing it away before it has time to work. What do you think?
Also, is there anything I can do to stop myself gagging when i spray it?

Try gargling warm salted water. Most sore throats **** caused by a virus and there are no medications that will help.

Yes, you probaby are washing it away if you drink after each spray. You can slow down the gag reflex but it is not something you can make happen immediately. It is something you would have to work on over time. The best thing you can do for it now is to relax by controlling your breathing so as to slow it down. Deep breaths taken might help.
