what to do about painful stools?!

Question: What to do about painful stools?
I recently had surgery, a week ago to be exact. I had a bowel movement two days before my surgery, which would be on a Wednesday. After my surgery (which was on my knee) I felt constipated and bloated. I had a bowel movement the following Monday but it was so painful it made me cry. It almost felt like it got stuck and no matter how much I pushed, it wouldn't move. I was in there for a good hour and finally got a little out, but that is all. After that painful incident I tried stool softeners and they haven't done much. But again, I am taking pain medicine when needed. Maybe one pill a day, sometimes two. I have had two maybe three bowel movements since then, but they hurt so bad! Terribly bad that I dread going! :( Is this just because of the pain pills or is there more to this? Any help here?!

Perhaps your pain medication is causing constipation? I help to run a site for Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and people often email about IBS-C (constipation) with very similar problems to yours.

Have you tried Metumicil?

I would advise drinking a lot of water, as that naturally softens stools, and pushes fecal matter through.
I think this might be a combination of your operation, and obviously being inactive for a little while, and pain medication, which sometimes does cause constipation. If you can, eat fruit, something like dried or tinned prunes is good. If you are desperate you could try something like Ex-Lax, which from what I remember goes through you like a dose of salts. (Epsom salts, also an old remedy for constipation). Try to eat fiber, such as fruits or vegetables when you can, and keep drinking water. Your bowels need to get moving again, and periods of inactivity, (which you just cannot help at the moment) or pain-killers can make them very sluggish. I hope you get better soon.
