High School Blood Drive?!

Question: High School Blood Drive?
A few months ago I went to two different blood donor centers 2 or 3 times and tried to donate blood, but every time I would get so nervous about my pulse being high, that my pulse would be too high to donate. I even tried taking two ativan beforehand and my pulse was still too high! After that I decided that it just wasn't for me and stopped trying. On Valentines Day (Monday) my school is having a blood drive in the cafeteria. I really want to donate and help people and I was wondering if maybe it would be easier to relax in a school blood drive. Does anyone know how to effectively lower your pulse and is it a good idea to try again or just skip it? Like I said it's not the actual giving blood but knowing that my pulse CAN'T be high that makes it high... its a psychological thing.

Answers:

Sit down before you attempt to give and take a few slow deep breaths. Imagine a place where you feel warm and safe. These are relaxation techniques and may help you keep your pulse down. You are correct, it's a mind thing. However, it's very real for you and don't feel bad if you can't give. Doesn't mean that you cannot keep trying. By trying and trying to relax, you may very well be able to give one day. Try natural things to relax, that is much better than taking medications to relax. Sometimes medications will keep you from being able to donate as well, so just take it easy and see what happens. You have nothing to lose, and so much to gain by trying. Good luck.

High pulse can be a sign of nerves, but another thing it indicates is relative fitness. Check your pulse when you're relaxed and make sure you're getting enough exercise. Make sure you're well hydrated. Avoid caffeine. I would definitely try again. Try thinking about the people you're helping rather than what's happening to you. And do not take Ativan beforehand.
